The UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution supporting the transition of leadership in Syria, which China opposed.

China hopes the Syrian issue can be resolved with peaceful and political dialogue within the Arab League. China believes the international community should fully respect Syria’s sovereignty, the independent choice of the Syrian people, and the result of the political dialogue among the nation’s various parties.

China condemns all acts of violence against innocent civilians. All parties involved should end the violence immediately. China also does not approve of armed intervention or forcing a leadership change. China has sent a special envoy to Syria in stepped-up diplomatic efforts and says it has received no invitation to a meeting in Tunis to discuss the situation.

Zhai Jun, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister and Special Envoy, said, "We call on the Syrian government to listen to the people’s legitimate desire for reforms and development. We also call on all the political parties in Syria to express their political wills through legal and non-violent means."

Liu Weimin, spokesman of Chinese Foreign Ministry, said, "The final details for this meeting have not yet been laid out. According to my knowledge, China has not yet received a formal invitation, so I’m afraid at this point it is hard to say whether China will send a representative."
